Cooking Fire Safety

Citizens and residents are reminded to exercise common sense fire safety when cooking and keep Safety First. In 2012, there have been two civilian deaths in unrelated fire related incidents in Prince George's County, sadly, each of these tragic deaths occurred accidentally and involved cooking. Over the past 24 hours, there have been three home fires with the cause attributed to cooking. Of note is "unattended cooking" which is the leading cause of fires and fire related injuries in Prince George's County and across the Country.

This morning at around 1:45 am, a fire started by unattended cooking caused $10,000 in damages and displaced the family at a single family home in the 12400 block of Poplar View Drive in Glenn Dale. No injuries were reported.

On Friday afternoon, March 2, unattended cooking caused a fire at a single family home in the 7400 block of Jefferson Street in Lanham. The fire caused an estimated $10,000 in fire loss. No injuries were reported, however, the family was displaced.

Also on Friday, just after 11:00 pm, a fire in a single family home in the 4900 block of Temple Hill Road was caused by unattended cooking and caused $25,000 in estimated fire loss. The family was displaced and making their own arrangements for shelter. No injuries reported.

The combined career, civilian and volunteer personnel of the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department ask that you keep safety first and remember these tips when you cook.

* Watch What You Heat

The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking.
Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.
If you are simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you're cooking.
Stay alert! To prevent cooking fires, you have to be alert. You won't be if you are sleepy, have been drinking alcohol, or have taken medicine that makes you drowsy.

Keep Things That Can Catch Fire and Heat Sources Apart

Keep anything that can catch fire - potholders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging, towels, or curtains - away from your stovetop.
Keep the stovetop, burners, and oven clean.
Keep pets off cooking surfaces and nearby countertops to prevent them from knocking things onto the burner.
Wear short, close-fitting or tightly rolled sleeves when cooking. Loose clothing can dangle onto stove burners and catch fire if it comes into contact with a gas flame or electric burner.

Volunteer Fire Fighter Kevin O'Toole and Ethan Sorrell Update

One week after 22-year-old Bladensburg Volunteer Fire Fighter Kevin O'Toole sustained burns over 50% of his body he remains in "Critical but stable" condition in the Burn Unit at Medstar at the Washington Hospital Center.

He had a couple of skin graphs procedures during the week and on Friday he went through a "scrubbing" of his burn injuries. Kevin also had a physical therapy session and was able to raise his hands over his head. He is taking strolls around the Burn Unit with his nurse and physical therapy staff and is said to be doing quite well.

Friends, family, co-workers and the DC Firefighters Burn Foundation continue to keep Kevin and his parents company as they progress through the recovery process.

Ethan Sorrell is spending some time in North Carolina with his family after being released on Tuesday evening. He is expected to return to Prince George's County later this week for scheduled medical appointments at the Burn Center. Ethan will also be spending considerable time with his firefighting partner Kevin.

Park Employees Save Co-Worker from Cardiac Arrest

The Prince George’s County Fire/Emergency Medical Services Department is pleased to acknowledge employees of the Maryland National Capitol Park and Planning Commission (MNCPPC) that saved the life of a fellow employee this afternoon.

Just after 12 pm today, Thursday, March 1, 2012, Firefighter/Medics from the Largo/Kettering Fire/EMS Station #846 were alerted for an unconscious person at Watkins Regional Park in Kettering. A 911 caller described the situation as saying that someone was performing CPR on the downed man.

Firefighter/Medics arrived and encountered an adult male employee of the MNCPPC that was reported to have gone into cardiac arrest. Fellow employees swiftly moved to render care by performing CPR and using an AED. Bystander CPR was immediately started and a MNCPPC owned and maintained Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) was quickly applied. The AED detected a “shockable” heart rhythm and administered two “shocks.”

Firefighter/Medics arrived and the found the patient alert and conscious. Paramedics transported the patient to a nearby hospital. The patient has survived sudden cardiac arrest and has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital. The AED was downloaded and confirmed the patient was in cardiac arrest.

“This incident demonstrates the necessity for community involvement in CPR training. This gentleman was afforded a much better chance of survival from his cardiac arrest due to the efforts of his co-worker who started CPR immediately. Survival rates in sudden cardiac arrest drop drastically in cases where CPR is not started until after the arrival of EMS units,” stated Fire/EMS Department Assistant Chief Dennis Wood. “Recent changes to American Heart Association recommendations describe excellent improvements where bystanders initiate chest compressions only until EMS units can arrive. The addition of a facility automated external defibrillator again improves outcomes significantly.”

Prince George’s County Fire Chief Marc Bashoor stated, “I am pleased to hear of the fast thinking and quick work of the employees that I credit with saving a co-workers life. The chain of survival worked in this case; 911 notification, bystander CPR, early access to AED, paramedic intervention and quick entry into a medical facility. I commend the employees and the MNCPPC for maintaining an AED on-site.”

PEPCO Donates Smoke Alarms to Residents of the County

The Prince George’s County Fire/Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department graciously accepted a generous donation of smoke alarms from PEPCO. The donation was made this morning while at the Line of Duty Death Memorial, located at the Cranford-Graves Fire Services Building in Landover Hills.

The Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department has historically gone door-to-door within our communities, spreading fire safety information and checking smoke alarms. When a home is in need of a working smoke alarm, the Department installs one at no cost to the resident.

Smoke alarm checks are a staple of the fire service and community outreach efforts. We do this because we know that having a working smoke alarm increases the chances of you surviving a fire in your home by 50 percent. Tragically, we have seen home fires where loved ones have perished, and the home did not have a working smoke alarm.

Working smoke alarms save lives. The generosity of organizations providing us with free alarms enables us to help you. PEPCO is a true public safety partner, providing the Department with free smoke alarms that we in turn install in your home—Keeping Safety First to ensure everyone goes home. PEPCO has donated 7000 smoke alarms over the past 8 years.

Fire Chief Marc S. Bashoor acknowledged the donation of smoke alarms, saying, “We graciously accept the 1000 smoke alarms and 30 hearing-impaired smoke alarms that PEPCO is donating to us today. We accept these life-saving devices as we stand at the Line of Duty Death Memorial for Prince George’s County Firefighters. A working smoke alarm provides you with an early warning of a fire, allowing you time to escape and notify 911.” He concluded by saying, “With an early 911 notification, the Fire/EMS Department arrives sooner, before the fire grows in intensity. Early notification also enables you to save yourself, instead of firefighters having to rush into your home to save you. Having a working smoke alarm helps both you and us, in the prevention of injuries and death. It allows us to arrive sooner; it allows you and your loved ones to get out safely.”

The Fire/EMS Department also acknowledged the donation of 300 smoke alarms this past December, when our community saturation increased after a fire claimed three lives in a Lewisdale home. 1-800-BOARD-Up donated the alarms to bridge the gap between the larger donations by PEPCO. During our Safety First – Home for the Holidays smoke alarm check, firefighters found that nearly 25 percent of homes did not have a working smoke alarm. Most homes had an alarm that did not work, mostly due to the lack of a battery. In other instances, the smoke alarms failed to work because they were more than 10 years old.

“This donation is a great way to support the community and strengthen the partnership that exists between PEPCO and the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department,” said Jerry Pasternak, PEPCO Regional Vice President for Maryland. “Getting these alarms into people's homes is important to our customers, our communities, and our first responders. PEPCO is proud to support this life-saving initiative.”

Homeowners and occupants must take personal responsibility to ensure they have a working smoke alarm. Test your alarm on the first day of each month, Safety First Day of the Month, and replace your battery at least once a year. The ideal time to remember to perform this important function is when we adjust our clocks for Daylight Saving Time. This year, we move our clocks forward one hour on Sunday, March 11, 2012. This serves as a natural reminder to install a fresh battery in your home’s smoke alarm.

Safety First Day of the Month - Test your Smoke Alarm

Today is March 1, 2012, and being as it is the first day of the month, it is time to perform the most basic function in ensuring you, your family and loved ones are protected by a working smoke alarm.

On the first day of every month the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department will remind you to test your smoke alarm to ensure it is working.

Push the “test” button on the front cover of your wall/ceiling mounted smoke alarm.

An audible warning tone should be heard loud and clear throughout the area it is located.

• If your smoke alarm does not emit a sound when tested:

1. Provide a fresh battery to the smoke alarm and re-test.

2. Still no audible warning?? Replace the smoke alarm with a new one immediately.

When testing your smoke alarm, it’s a good time to gather your family and allow them to hear the audible warning signal. Let them know what to do in the event they hear the warning, discuss two ways out of every room and designate a safe meeting place outside in the event of a fire or other emergency.

Arson is Cause of Riverdale Fire that Injured Seven Firefighters

Officials Seek Community Help in Identifying Suspects

A fire occurred on Friday, February 24, 2012, at 9:11 P.M., in which 7 firefighters were injured and treated at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Six of those injured have been released, with 1 remaining in the Burn Unit. A Press Conference was held at the Fire/EMS Departments Cranford-Graves Fire Services Building in Landover Hills. The purpose was to bring everyone up to date with the firefighter injuries and announce the cause and origin of the fire.

Prince George’s County Fire Chief Marc Bashoor was elated to announce that Bladensburg Volunteer Fire Fighter Ethan Sorrell has been released from the hospital. Ethan was released on Tuesday evening. He was injured in the fire on Friday evening, February 24, 2012. Bladensburg Volunteer Chief Randy Kuenzil informed Chief Bashoor that Sorrell will have a follow up appointment next week. Sorrell returned home with his parents to North Carolina for about a week or until his follow up visit next week. Upon his return he will more than likely reside at the Bladensburg Fire/EMS Station and make follow-up medical appointments and spending most of his time at the Burn Unit with his fellow firefighter, Kevin O’Toole. He remains in "Critical" but "Stable" condition. Kevin is undergoing medical procedures and skin graph surgeries and is expected to remain in the Burn Unit for up six weeks,

As with any fire of this magnitude, a complete and thorough investigation into the cause and origin is conducted. This particular investigation involved investigators from the Prince George’s County Fire/Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department’s Office of the Fire Marshal; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; County Police Department; and the State’s Attorney’s Office. Investigators have worked around the clock since the incident occurred to determine the cause and origin of the fire.

The investigative team has determined the fire that occurred at 6404 57th Avenue in Riverdale is the result of arson, the area of origin is the basement. The house next door, 6402 57th Avenue, where a previously unreported fire occurred on an earlier date, is also being investigated as arson. Investigators reached this conclusion based on evidence collected at the scene of both fires. Because this is an open and on-going criminal investigation, evidence cannot and will not be discussed.

Prince George’s County Fire Chief Marc S. Bashoor stated, “We will leave no stone unturned. Every resource available to us will be used to find the person(s) responsible for setting this fire. Once the responsible person(s) have been identified, we will work with the State’s Attorney to ensure they are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

States Attorney Angela Alsobrooks spoke and stated, "I am impressed with the case that investigators have put together and agree with the Fire Chief in that we will prosecute the responsible person to the fullest extent of the Law."

In addition to criminal charges related to arson, there could be criminal charges stemming from the injuries to the firefighters.

Early Morning Fire Damages Cheverly Building

Prince George's County Firefighters battled a blaze at a 2-story structure in Cheverly this morning. At around 3:45 am firefighters were dispatched to investigate an automatic fire alarm called in to Public Safety Communications by an alarm monitoring company. Additional calls from the community reported smoke in the area and dispatchers upgraded the assignment to a full building fire assignment. Firefighters arrived at 5802 Arbor Street to find a 2-story commercial structure that was being used as a church with heavy smoke showing. The fire was extinguished in about 20 minutes by 30 firefighters on the scene.

Fire Investigators are currently searching for the cause of the fire and have this incident "under investigation." Fire loss is estimated at $250,000. No injuries were reported.

Fire Chief Promises Thorough and Complete Investigation and Review of Riverdale Incident

Prince George's County Fire Chief Marc S. Bashoor has stated that he will ensure a thorough and complete investigation into the incident that resulted in seven firefighters being injured. On Friday evening, February 24, 2012, firefighters responded to 911 reports of a house fire at 6404 57th Avenue in Riverdale. Two of the injured firefighters remain hospitalized in the Burn Unit at Medstar at the Washington Hospital Center.

In order to discover the chain of events and circumstances which contributed to the outcome of this incident, Fire Chief Bashoor has issued a high-priority directive for the Department to immediately embark on a thorough investigation which will involve three parallel, ongoing and interrelated disciplines:

• Determination of Cause and Origin – as is customarily conducted under the direction of our Office of the Fire Marshall.

• An Operational Review and After Action Report – Conducted under the direction of our Emergency Services Command.

• A Thorough Safety Audit of the Incident – by a Safety Investigation Team (SIT), this will be conducted under the direction of the Risk Management and Safety Office, by both internal and external partners that the Fire Chief will select.

Fire Chief Bashoor wrote to members of the Fire/EMS Department, "If we are to truly learn from this experience, we MUST first be honest with ourselves and honest and forthcoming with information that these teams will need."

It is important to note that all three Investigative Teams will be regularly communicating their progress. The SIT will be selected from both internal and external resources to assure independent verification of fact.

Bashoor stated. "It is my intent to leave no stone un-turned and no question un-asked as we seek to discover the contributing factors that precipitated this incident. As Fire Chief, I commit to you that each of these inquests will be open and honest. I further commit that the eventual findings will be promptly released in the form of a written After Action Report." He concluded, "This After Action Report will serve to benefit not only firefighters in Prince George's County but will be made available to all fire departments to assist them in avoiding similar circumstances."

An annoucemnt concernng the cause and origin of the fire is expected within the next 24 to 48 hours.

UPDATE on Medical Status of Two Injured Firefighters

The injured firefighters, Ethan Sorrell and Kevin O'Toole, continue to show signs of progress each and every day. The volunteers firefighters are still in the Burn Unit ICU at Medstar at the Washington Hospital Center.

Ethan had his breathing tube removed and is now breathing on his own. His spirits have increased as he was encouraged to walk the hallways and had the opportunity to spend time with some visitors.

Kevin had skin graph surgery performed on several of his burns today and we were told that it went well.

Both Ethan and Kevin are currently resting at the Doctors direction.

Seat Pleasant House Fire - Goldleaf

Firefighters and paramedics from the Seat Pleasant community were alerted to a house fire at around 2:50 this afternoon. Firefighters arrived at the 2-story single family home in the 600 block of Goldleaf Avenue with heavy smoke issuing from the structure.

Firefighters initiated an interior attack and search/rescue. All searches proved negative and the fire was knocked down in about 15 minutes.

A female occupant was at home and was able to escape the home safely. No injuries, civilian and firefighter, were reported. Two adults occupants of the house will be displaced and they are making their own living arrangments.

Cause of the fire is unknown at this time and fire loss estimates are not yet available.

The Fire/EMS Department has been very aggressive, more than usual, in our efforts to ensure every home has a working smoke alarm. Because of this aggressiveness we have depleted our supply of new smoke alarms. Officials from PEPCO will be on hand to deliver a extremely generous donation of smoke alarms to Prince George's County. They are making a huge donation of alarms. Another group supplied the Fire/EMS Department with a quantity of smoke alarms that helped us bridge the gap between PEPCO Donations. The local franchise of 1-800-Board-Up will be on hand as well.

We will also remind everyone that the first of every month is the day we have designated for you to test your smoke alarm and ensure it is working. Safety First Day of the Month!!!

UPDATE - Two Residents Rescued from Chillum Apartment Fire - Sheridan Street

Prince George's County Firefighters battled a second floor apartment fire and rescued two occupants from their Chillum apartment this afternoon. At around 4:00 pm, Fire/EMS units were dispatched to the 600 block of Sheridan Street for a reported apartment fire. Firefighters from Chillum Fire/EMS Station #844 arrived first and reported smoke showing from the second floor of a three story apartment building. Firefighters were alerted by residents that other residents were trapped in their apartments. Firefighters from Hyattsville #801 and Chillum-Adelphi #834 and other Fire/EMS Stations worked to locate and remove the trapped occupants from the building.

As one team of firefighters worked to extinguish the fire located in a second floor bedroom other firefighters performed a primary search and located two occupants still inside their apartments. One occupant was removed via the interior stairwell and another occupant was removed by firefighters using a ground ladder from his third floor apartment. Both of the rescued adult occupants were transported to Medstar at the Washington Hospital Center with possible smoke inhalation injuries.

The fire was knocked down in about 15 minutes. It appears that nine apartment units will be uninhabitable and residents will be displaced. The County Citizen Services Unit and American Red Cross will assist with temporary shelter and basic needs supplies.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and fire loss estimates are not yet available.

Monday, February 27, UPDATE

Only 1 person, a senior citizen male rescued from the third floor went to the hospital. The second person was treated on the scene but did not want to go to the hospital.

The fire was caused by a malfunctioning power strip in the bedroom of a second floor apartment.

Fire loss is estimated at $150,000.

Three apartment units are displaced that consist of 6 adults and 6 children - all being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Parents of three volunteer firefighters injured in a house fire on Friday evening spoke to members of the media today to personally describe their sons medical status. Parents of the three firefighters; McClary, Sorrell and O’Toole, County Fire Chief Bashoor and Bladensburg Volunteer Chief Randy Kuenzli all spoke. The group took a moment from the Fourth Floor East Burn Unit at Medstar at the Washington Hospital Center and spoke near the front entrance to the hospital.

The mother of Riverdale Volunteer Fire Fighter Michael McClary spoke on his behalf and explained that he had been released yesterday. Fire Fighter McClary suffered injuries to his ribs and burns to both hands. Cheryl McClary emotionally stated, “We are very thankful and our hearts are still with the ones that are still in hospital.”

Vann and Kathy Sorrell of Buies Creek, North Carolina, and Jeff and Jane O’Toole of Bethpage, New York, each spoke with members of the media. The parents, no strangers to the fire service, each described their sons current medical status and spoke highly of the care they are receiving at the Burn Unit. They also spoke highly of the support system provided by members of the fire service and the DC Firefighters Burn Foundation. Both injured firefighters remain in “Critical” and “Stable” condition. Their parents describe them as being in relatively good spirits and showing some signs of improvement. Each has a long road to recovery.

Jeff O’Toole stated his son has at least 6 weeks in the Burn Unit with another 6 months of physical rehabilitation after that. Kevin O’Toole sustained burns over 40% of his body. He is scheduled for skin graph procedure on Monday. Kevin can communicate by talking.

Ethan Sorrell remains intubated, however, is conscious, and communicates by writing notes. He is scheduled for examinations tomorrow that can help determine the extent of his airway burns.

The Burn Units Medical Staff allowed Ethan to walk over to visit Kevin for a short period of time.

The fathers of both injured are also volunteer firefighters in their hometowns; New York and North Carolina. They request the Washington, DC area media to share todays press conference and updates with their counterparts in their respective hometowns as there are family, friends and co-workers waiting on updated news.

UPDATE - Family of 2 Critically Injured Firefighters to Address Media

The families of two critically injured firefighters, Ethan Sorrell and Kevin O'Toole, will address members of the media on Sunday afternoon. Both families travelled from out of state to be with their loved one and have remained with them since their arrival.

These firefighters remain hospitalized after sustaining burn injuries in a Riverdale house Friday on Friday evening.

Chillum House Fire - 18th Avenue

At about 3:45 am, Sunday, February 26, Fire/EMS units were alerted to a house fire in Chillum. Firefighters arrived at a 2-story single family home in the 8000 block of 18th Avenue with heavy fire showing from the rear of the structure. It appears the fire may have started on the rear deck with extension to the interior. At the height of the incident the fire burned through the roof of the home and all firefighters were evacuated to the safety of the exterior where the bulk of the fire was knocked down. Firefighters re-entered the structure to complete the extinguishment. The fire was declared out at about 4:25 am. The occupants were displaced and assisted by the County Citizen Services Unit. Fire Investigations was on the scene and indicates the cause is under investigation. The fire loss was placed at approximately $150000 total for the structure and contents. No injuries reported.

Baker, III released the following statement on seven Prince George's County Fire and EMS Department fire fighters who sustained injuries battling a house fire in Riverdale yesterday evening. At this time two firefighters, Bladensburg Volunteer Fire Fighters Ethan Sorrell and Kevin O'Toole remain in critical condition at Washington Hospital Center. A third fire fighter, Riverdale Volunteer, Michael McLary also remains hospitalized for injuries. Four other injured fire fighters, three from Riverdale and one from College Park, were released and sent home last night.

"My thoughts and prayers are with these brave men and their families and I ask all County residents to do the same. Two Firefighters Remain in Critical Condition

Three firefighters remain hospitalized at the Washington Hospital Center after sustaining injuries battling a house fire in Riverdale on Friday evening. Four other firefighters were treated and released overnight for their injuries.

Bladensburg Volunteer Fire Fighter Ethan Sorrell, 21 years of age, remains in "Critical" condition with burns to his airway. Family members left Durham NC, last night to be with him today.

Bladensburg Volunteer Fire Fighter Kevin O’Toole, 22 years of age, was evaluated late last night/early this morning as being in "Critical" condition with 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 40% of his body. Family members from Long Island, NY, were en route last night to be with Kevin.

Riverdale Volunteer Fire Fighter Michael McLary, 19 years of age, continued to receive treatment for injuries to his upper body/ribs. His ribs are not fractured, however, bruised with possible cartilage damage. He may be released as early as today. Family members were with him last night.

Dozens of family, friends and fire service personnel have been at the hospital throughout the night with the injured firefighters and remain there today. The Burn Unit at the Washington Hospital Center, their Doctors and staff are the very best at what they do - treating burn patients.

The Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department sincerely appreciates the support provided by the DC Firefighters Burn Foundation. The Foundation is dedicated to assisting in the recovery and rehabilitation of injured firefighters and burn patients in the D.C. Metropolitan Area. Members of the Foundation were at the hospital before the first firefighter arrived and started support efforts for the injured firefighters, family and co-workers. Two of the injured firefighters have primary family members coming from out of town. The Foundation made accommodations for them at a nearby hotel and will continue to provide support for as long as is needed.

Firefighters that have been previously burned and treated at the Burn Unit become members of a fraternity. These firefighters return to the Burn Unit whenever a firefighter receives burn injuries and provide valuable insight to family, friends and co-workers about the treatment and recovery process. One of those fraternity members is Riverdale Volunteer Chief Chuck Ryan. He sustained critical burn injuries while on the job with DCFD. Ryan was at the Burn Unit overnight helping others to understand the treatment process that Bladensburg firefighters were receiving and what to expect in the days to come.

The volunteer leadership of Blandensburg, Riverdale, College Park as well as Fire Chief Marc Bashoor and the entire Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department acknowledge and are grateful for the tremendous outpouring and offers of assistance from fire departments across the National Capitol Region. We are also inspired by the numerous well wishes, thoughts and prayers being offered from across the Country for our injured firefighters.

Prince George's County Fire Investigators continue their work to determine the cause and origin of the fire. The investigation is open and on-going. Fire loss to the vacant structure is estimated at $75,000.

Updates on the medical condition of the injured firefighters will be provided as additional information becomes available.

Seven Firefighters Injured Battling Riverdale House Fire

Seven Prince George’s County Firefighters were injured as they battled a house fire in Riverdale. At about 9:11 pm, Friday, February 24, firefighters were alerted to a house fire in the 6400 block of 57^th Avenue. The engine from Riverdale and the truck from Bladensburg were the first to arrive and encountered a 1-story, with basement, single family home with fire on both levels.

Preliminary reports indicate that firefighters had initiated an interior attack on the fire when a sudden rush of air, fanned by high winds, entered from the rear of the house either from a door or window being opened or broken out. The sudden addition of a large amount of fresh air into the fire environment created a “fire ball’ inside engulfing the firefighters. Firefighters did all they could do to escape the untenable conditions that consumed the structure interior.

Incident commanders immediately called for additional resources by requesting an EMS Task Force and a Fire Task Force as well as ordering the evacuation tones to be sounded. There were about 65 firefighters, paramedics and incident commanders on the scene.

Firefighters and EMS personnel went to the aid of the injured firefighters and prepared them for transport to the Burn Unit at the Washington Hospital Center. The injuries included burns, fractures and lacerations.

Another team of firefighters regrouped outside and re-entered the structure and had the fire extinguished in about 25 minutes after arrival.

Of the seven firefighters transported; four, 3 from Riverdale and 1 from College Park, will be released and sent home tonight.

The most seriously injured firefighters are two from the Bladensburg Fire/EMS Station #809 that were part of the first arriving truck company.

Bladensburg Volunteer Firefighter #1 is listed in “Critical” condition suffering from burn injuries to his upper body.

Bladensburg Volunteer Firefighter #2 is listed in “Serious” condition with 2^nd and 3^rd degree burns to 30% of his body.

The third firefighter being admitted is from Riverdale Fire/EMS Station #807. Riverdale Volunteer Firefighter #1 is hospitalized with fractured ribs.

Dozens of fire service members as well as family and friends are with the injured firefighters at the Washington Hospital Center including Fire Chief Marc S. Bashoor, Riverdale Volunteer Fire Chief Chucky Ryan and Bladensburg Volunteer Chief Randy Kuenzli.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and fire loss estimates are not yet available. This is a vacant structure although firefighters believed the house may have been occupied as a car was parked in the driveway.

The Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department will fully investigate this incident and review all aspects of the operations from a safety perspective.

Updates concerning the medical status and the cause and origin of the fire will be made as information becomes available.

Kitchen Fire Extinguished by Sprinklers - Mom Under Arrest

A residential sprinkler activated, contained a kitchen fire and spared a Laurel family from tragedy this afternoon. By the time the event had concluded a mother of 2 young children was under arrest.

At around 1:15 pm, Friday, February 24, 2012, firefighters from the Laurel Fire/EMS Station #849 and Beltsville Fire/EMS Station #831 were alerted to investigate an automatic fire alarm at a 3-story apartment building in the 600 block of Main Street in Laurel. Firefighters arrived to find an apartment filled with smoke from ceiling to floor and remnants of a kitchen fire. The kitchen fire had been extinguished by an activated residential sprinkler.

FIrefighters ensured the fire was completely extinguished and made a disturbing discovery while conducting a search of the apartment. Two young children, ages 1 and 3, were found just outside of the kitchen area. They were wet from being sprayed with water from the sprinklers that doused the fire. Their mother, a 33 year old female, was also located in the apartment. She was reported to have passed out while under the influence of an unknown substance.

The three occupants were removed from the hazardous atmosphere and tended to by EMT's. The EMS Duty Officer reported to the scene and used an pulse oximeter to determine if the children were in danger of smoke inhalation or carbon monoxide injuries. Fortunately, it was determined that they did not need hospitalization and custody of the children was turned over to their grandmother.

According to Jim Collins of the City of Laurel Police Department, "The mother, Ciarra Williams, was arrested and charged with "Reckless Endangerment" and two counts of "Child Abuse."

The cause of the fire is "unattended cooking" and fire loss estimated at $500. The residential sprinkler is credited with containing the fire and limiting the amount of damage as well as injuries to the apartment occupants.

VFW Announce Firefighter and Paramedic of the Year

The Prince George’s County Fire/Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department received notification that two of our members have been selected to receive a very prestigious award. The Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) chose Fire Fighter/Medic Stephanie A. Buffum as their organization’s “2011 Paramedic of the Year.” The organization’s choice for “2011 Fire Fighter of the Year” is Fire Fighter Nicole Orme. Both Buffum and Orme will be awarded at the Post and District levels.

Fire Fighter/Medic Buffum, according to the VFW, is being recognized for her “extraordinary knowledge in the medical field, keen ability to problem solve, attention to detail, and profound dedication to the citizens she serves and protects. Her 12 years of service and accomplishments is just a short testament that she loves what she does, and bigger and better things are coming her way.”

Upon being told of her award, Buffum stated, “I am excited and honored to have been selected for this award.”

Fire Fighter Orme, the VFW stated, “has a history of serving our fellow soldiers, including mobilizing the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department and community to create military care packages for more than 100 soldiers serving overseas. She has made multiple visits to Walter Reed to present care packages to the wounded warriors and their families. Fire Fighter Orme has worked with the USO Metro out of Fort Meade, coordinating multiple dinners during Thanksgiving and Christmas, whereby hundreds of soldiers unable to be home for the holidays and the families of deployed soldiers were able to a meal. Fire Fighter Orme makes her family, Department, and community very proud. It is an honor to present her as our organization’s 2011 Fire Fighter of the Year.”

“I am both humbled and grateful to be recognized for doing something I absolutely love,” said Fire Fighter Orme.

The VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service. Many arrived home wounded or sick and were left to care for themselves, as there was no medical care or veterans' pension for them.

In their misery, some of these veterans banded together and formed organizations with what would become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. After chapters were formed in Ohio, Colorado and Pennsylvania, the movement quickly gained momentum. By 1915, membership grew to 5,000; by 1936, membership was almost 200,000.

Annually, the 2.1 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliary contribute more than 11 million hours of volunteerism in the community, including participation in Make A Difference Day and National Volunteer Week.

Fire Chief Marc S. Bashoor stated, "I am extremely proud that such a noble organization as the VFW has selected two of our personnel for these impressive awards. The awards reflect favorably on Nicole and Stephanie as individuals and on the entire Fire/EMS Department. Congratulations."

Fire/EMS Department Adopts Kwikpoint Visual Language Translator

described Kwikpoint the best by calling it,
“A simple yet powerful tool.”

A Kwikpoint visual language tool allows people to communicate both basic needs and complex ideas quickly and easily by simply pointing to universally recognized graphics and symbols. The Kwikpoint tool is compact and can be opened to display an array of pictures and diagrams as well as commonly used phrases in both English and Spanish. A paramedic that encounters a patient and is unable to communicate verbally can use this tool and point to a graphic and quickly learn where a victim feels pain. During a Press conference held today in Hyattsville, Prince George’s County Councilmember Will Campos described the Kwikpoint the best by calling it, “A simple yet powerful tool.”

The Fire/EMS Department has distributed a Medical Visual Language Translator on all EMS units in Prince George’s County. The product was purchased through a Federal Grant to the Office of Homeland Security.

Fire/EMS Chief Bashoor announced all EMS units have been equipped with VLT.

Departmental Collision Sends Two to Hospital

The Volunteer Chief from the District Heights Fire/EMS Station was involved in a 2-vehicle motor vehicle crash while responding on a call. At around 7:00 pm, Monday, February 20, the chief officer was responding to an emergency incident with lights and audible warning devices on. While clearing the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Donnell Drive a civilian vehicle collided with the Fire Department vehicle.

The lone occupant of the civilian vehicle, an adult female, was transported to an area hospital with injuries to her lower extremities. The volunteer chief, an adult male, was transported to the same hospital with pain and discomfort in his upper body.

Both vehicles sustained significant damage and could be totaled. The County Police Department are investigating the incident.

Vehicle into KFC with Fatal Injuries - Updated Info (9:45 pm)

At about 6:30 pm this evening a vehicle left the road and drove through the large glass windows of a Kentucky Fried Chicken Restaurant in Landover.

At about 6:30 pm fire/EMS units responded to the intersection of Sheriff Road and Martin Luther King Highway in Landover. Firefighter/Medics arrived to find a vehicle inside the KFC with 1 patron (see updated info below) sustaining fatal injuries after being struck by the vehicle. Four other people have been injured but none appear to be serious.

The Departments Collapse Team is on location to secure the structure so an investigation can begin.

The County Police PIO will provide additional information about the investigation.

9:45 pm update:

Four other people sustained injuries; one person refused transport to a hospital and three were transported to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The County Police have determined that the deceased was not a patron of KFC. Their investigation continues. Please contact the County Police PIO for additional information.

District Heights Toddler Succumbs to Injuries from Home Fire

It is with deep regret that we announce that the 2-year-old girl rescued by firefighters from her District Heights home has succommed to her injuries. On Friday, February 17, about 1:45 am, firefighters operated at the scene of a fire inside of a 2-story duplex home on Hil-Mar Drive. Firefighters used ground ladders to access the 2nd floor bedroom of the young child. She was removed, treated for smoke inhalation injuires and transported to a hospital in "Critical" condition.

Despite the very best efforts of firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and medical professionals, Mariah Kendra Hood, DOB 11-5-2009, passed away at Childrens Hospital on Sunday afternoon, February 19, 2012. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

Fire Investigators have labeled this fire as "accidental" and is attributed to unattended cooking. Fire loss is estimated at $50,000. A working smoke alarm did sound alerting a family member.

Neighbors Help Temple Hills Family Escape House Fire

Neighbors in a Temple Hills community rushed to help neighbors still inside their burning home this evening. Around 8:15 pm, Sunday, February 19, Firefighters and Paramedics were dispatched to the 3200 block of Beaumont Street for a house fire with occupants trapped inside. Before firefighters arrived two neighbors ran into the burning home and helped a 50ish year old male in removing his father, typically confined to a wheelchair, from the second floor. Firefighters from the Silver Hill Fire/EMS Station #829 arrived first and reported a 2-story duplex with heavy fire showing from the second floor. Firefighters initiated an interior attack to extinguish the fire and complete a search of the entire structure to ensure everybody had made it out. There were 40 firefighters, paramedics and command officers on the scene. It required about 15 minutes to extinguish the fire which was contained to the second floor. The quick knockdown prevented fire extension to the attached duplex home.

A third neighbor that appears to have some medical training assisted two injured occupants by administering first aid. Paramedics evaluated and treated four people on the scene and transported two of those to a Burn Unit. A male occupant, 50ish years of age, sustained lacerations and smoke inhalation injuries and his father, 70ish years of age, was transported for smoke inhalation injuries. They were in "good" condition with non-life threatening injuries.

The County Citizen Services Unit and the American Red Cross are assisting the displaced family of three with temporary shelter. The occupants of the attached home were not displaced. The cause of the fire is under investigation and fie loss estimates are still being tabulated.

Landover Duplex Fire - Working Smoke Alarms Alert Residents

Firefighters battled a fire in a Landover duple this morning. At about 1:15 am, Saturday, February 18, firefighters were alerted to a fire in the 7700 block of Normandy Road. Firefighters arrived and reported heavy fire at the 2-story duplex structure. It required about 20 minutes to extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire loss is estimated at $125,000.

It is significant to note that working smoke alarms in each residence emitted a warning and provided the residents an opportunity to escape safely without injury. Both homes were occupied by 3 adults each and both homes are currently uninhabitable. Both families were assisted by the County Citizen Services Unit and the American Red Cross with temporary housing and basic necessities.

Indian Head Highway Crash

Prince George’s County Firefighters and Paramedics as well as the County Police were alerted to a single vehicle motor vehicle crash at about 3:30 am, Saturday, in Accokeek. Fire/EMS units from Accokeek and a heavy-duty rescue squad and paramedics from Fort Washington responded on this incident. Public Safety officials arrived at the crash scene on southbound Indian Head Highway just south of Farmington Road and found a vehicle that had crashed into the guardrail. No patient was found in the vehicle or in the immediate area. Fearing that a vehicle occupant may have been ejected from the vehicle or walked away after the crash, a search of the surrounding area was conducted. Firefighters, paramedics and police officers exercised due diligence in searching a broad area around the crash site. Firefighters used thermal imaging cameras capable of visualizing people that may not be visible by the human eye. The search yielded negative results.

It was noted that the ignition keys were missing from the vehicle leading first responders to believe that the operator may have left the scene on their own volition. The vehicle was towed and the scene was cleared after searching for over 30 minutes.

At around 8:30 am, an individual approached a citizen on Indian Head Highway in the general area of the earlier crash and asked for assistance and then fell unconscious. The citizen notified 911 and firefighter/medics responded to the scene. Paramedics assessed the patient as being a male in his 30’s with serious traumatic injuries. He became somewhat conscious and it was determined that he was involved in the earlier 3:30 am crash. It was not immediately known why he left the scene or where he went to despite being seriously injured.

The seriously injured patient was treated on the scene by paramedics and flown to a Trauma Center by Maryland State Police Trooper 2. He was transported in “serious” condition.

The crash remains under investigation by the County Police.

UPDATE - Hil Mar Drive Townhouse Fire

At 1:00 pm Firefighters and Paramedics returned to the 6100 block of Hil-Mar Drive to go door-to-door providing residents with fire safety information and checking smoke alarms.

The 2-year-old girl rescued by firefighters this morning remains in critical condition fighting for her life.

The 9-year-old male was treated and released from the hospital.

Fire Chief Bashoor has recently heard that Prince George's County Police Officers assisted with the rescue of the toddler. One police officer assited in positioning a ladder at the bedroom window allowing a faster ascent by firefighters to rescue the girl. Other police officers assisted in the removal of a mobility challenged occupant of an adjacent town house during the height of the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation with a fire loss estimated at $50,000.

Firefighters Rescue Toddler From District Heights Townhouse Fire

At about 1:45 am, Friday, February 17, Prince George’s County Firefighters and Paramedics were alerted to a townhouse fire with a child trapped. Fire/EMS units arrived at the 2-story, end of the row, townhouse at 6135 Hil-Mar Drive in District Heights with heavy fire showing from the first floor with some fire extension and heavy smoke on the second floor.

A working smoke alarm alerted one of the residents to the fire who was able to alert some of the other occupants. Three adults and one child had escaped the townhouse prior to the Fire Departments arrival; however, a 2-year-old was unable to be initially rescued by occupants and remained in a second floor bedroom.

As firefighters from District Heights stretched hose lines and initiated an attack on the fire, a crew of firefighters on-board the ladder truck from Silver Hill used ground ladders to gain access to a second floor bedroom, located the child and removed her back down the ladder. The 2-year-old female was not breathing and had no pulse. Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation was immediately started and paramedics transported the child to a nearby hospital in “Critical” condition.

A 9-year-old child was also transported to an area hospital for evaluation of smoke inhalation injuries.

The fire was extinguished within 15 minutes of arrival and appears to have started in the kitchen area; however, the official cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire loss estimates are still being tabulated.

After arrival at the hospital paramedics advised that a pulse had been restored on the 2-year-old and arrangements were being made to transfer her to Children’s National Medical Center. The toddler remains in “Critical” condition.

A firefighter sustained minor burn injuries and transported to the Burn Unit at Washington Hospital Center. It is expected that the firefighter will be treated and released this morning.

The Prince George's County Citizens Services Unit is on location assisting the displaced family.

Prince George's Fire/EMS Delegation Attend Memorial Service for Alexandria LODD

Members of the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department including career, civilian and volunteers paid their last respects today for an Alexandria Paramedic that made the ultimate sacrifice last week. A Memorial Service with Honors was held today for Paramedic Joshua A. Weissman that died after falling from a bridge overpass while tying to access possible patients involved in a 3-vehicle crash with auto fire on Route 395 in Alexandria.

Prince George's County Fire Chief Marc S. Bashoor, Deputy Fire Chief Frank Underwood and dozens of Fire/EMS Department members attended the services at the Beth El Hebrew Congregation. The Fire/EMS Honor Guard participated in the Memorial Service as well as honor guards from the County Police Department and Department of Corrections.

Prince George's County filled in Fire/EMS Stations in Alexandria and PGFD Fire Boat Lawrence Woltz extended their area of protection to include Alexandria, VA. By providing this staffing and coverage, Alexandria Fire Department personnel were able to participate in the viewing and memorial services. The entire membership of the Alexandria Fire Department escorted the body of Joshua Weismann up Seminary Road to the Beth El Hebrew Congregation for memorial services.

The Fire/EMS Department also had members serve as members of the National Capitol Region Incident Management Team that helped Alexandria in coordinating the services

Bowie Volunteer Responds on Crash Involving Twin Brother

Just after 2:00 am, Wednesday, February 15, a single vehicle motor vehicle crash occurred critically injuring the driver and occupant. Firefighters, EMT’s and Paramedics from Bowie Fire/EMS Stations and a heavy-duty rescue squad from Glenn Dale were alerted to the incident at Stonehaven Lane and Stoneybrook Drive in Bowie. A single vehicle, for unknown reasons, left the roadway and hit a tree. Two adult males, both in their early twenties, were trapped in the vehicle. Both occupants required heavy-duty hydraulic extrication tools (Jaws of Life) to free them. The passenger was extricated first and transported to a Trauma Center by a Paramedic Unit in critical condition.

The driver extrication was more challenging and required extra time to complete. He was extricated from the wreckage about 30 minutes of arrival of firefighters. He was treated on the scene by paramedics and flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore on-board Maryland State Police Trooper 2.

One of the first arriving units was the ambulance from Bowie Fire/EMS Station 839. Travis Murdoch was the person riding in the position on the basic life support ambulance that would be responsible for initial triage, assessment and treatment of the injured. It did not take long for Volunteer Firefighter/EMT Murdoch to see that it was his twin brother critically injured and trapped inside the vehicle. Murdoch’s brother, Chris, is also a member of the Bowie Volunteer Fire Department. As everyone can imagine emotions were high on the scene, however, personnel continued to work diligently to extricate, treat and transport the injured patients.

Travis Murdoch is employed as a police dispatcher at Prince George’s County Public Safety Communications. Fire Chief Marc Bashoor recently recognized him for his efforts in assisting in the rescue of four occupants of a burning Bowie house as well as his selection as Volunteer Fire Fighter of the year by the Knights of Columbus. Travis is with his brother at the Trauma Center in Baltimore accompanied by family, friends and members of the Fire/EMS Department. As of Wednesday evening, Chris Murdoch remains in Critical Condition, however is stable. He underwent numerous treatments and a surgery on Wednesday. The other patient remains in critical condition at a local Trauma Center.

The City of Bowie Police Department are investigating the crash.

The entire extended family of the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department; career, civilian and volunteer, has the Murdoch family in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Firefighter/Medic's Son Remembered What Dad Said and Helped Save a Life

So often it seems the things we say to our children go in one ear and out the other. With that being the case, we are not always as mindful as we perhaps should be when engaged in conversation while in the presence of our children. We don’t mind that they overhear some things; but at times they hear something they shouldn’t have, and they repeat it. A recent incident at Huntington Elementary School, involving 10-year-old Corey Wargo, is proof that our children are more often than not listening to us.

The Wargo family plays a significant role in the history and rich tradition of the Prince George’s County Fire/Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department. Sergeant Jerry Wargo retired with nearly 25 years of service to our County’s citizens and residents. His three sons, Christian, Corey, and Cody have followed in dad’s footsteps and are 4th generation firefighters in our Department.

10-year-old Clay Wargo

Fire Fighter/Medic Technician Corey Wargo, a 10-year veteran, is currently assigned to Seat Pleasant Fire/EMS Station #808. Corey and his wife, Carol, and sons Clay (10), Colin (8), and Chase (2) reside in Huntington, Maryland. With so many family members working in the Fire/EMS Department, it is safe to assume conversations in the Wargo household include work occurrences and how the family should respond in the event of a home emergency. Clay Wargo, a 4th grader at Huntington Elementary School, apparently heard and remembered some very important information from some of those conversations.

Clay recently witnessed a classmate choking on a hot dog during lunch at school. The child turned red, was unable to speak, and had put his hands around his throat. Clay recalled hearing his parents say, “When someone puts his hands around his throat, it means he is choking and needs help. When someone is choking, punch that person in the back and squeeze their stomach.” He recognized the universal sign of choking, without even knowing that is what it is called. Seeing what was happening, he quickly positioned himself behind his classmate and began to pound on the boy’s back. After several blows, a piece of hot dog was dislodged and coughed up. Clay had just performed successful back blows, a part of the Heimlich maneuver, which is used to dislodge an object someone is choking on. The two youngsters immediately notified a teacher of what had occurred.

Huntington Elementary School principal, Ramona Crowley, learned of the incident at the end of the school day. She notified Clay’s mother and proceeded to ‘make a big deal of Clayton’ at a hastily called school assembly. “Clayton is a very special young man. Thank heaven that he was sitting where he was during lunch. I’m also grateful to his father for taking time to teach Clayton such a valuable lesson,” said Principal Crowley.

Is it possible that we have another Wargo in training for a career with the Fire/EMS Department, a 5th generation firefighter? Hmmm…

Corey Wargo, stated, “I was surprised and proud that he had the courage and knowledge to step up and help someone in distress. His classmate had recently had braces put on and was afraid to chew. He decided to break off a piece of the hotdog and swallow it whole. The young man is very grateful!”

Congratulations to Clay Wargo for a job well done! He demonstrated the knowledge and courage to help someone in need, and quite possibly saved a life.

Two Unrelated Home Fires - Laurel and District Heights

Prince George’s County Firefighters extinguished two unrelated home fires last night. Fire loss for both homes is estimated at $75,000 and both families displaced, however, no civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

The first incident occurred Monday evening at about 8:00 pm at a 2-story single family home in Laurel. Fire/EMS units arrived at the home in the 15600 block of Plantation Court and found a fire on the rear deck. The cause of the fire was reported to have involved a “gas fireplace on deck.” The fire extended up the rear exterior wall and into the attic of the home. It required about 15 minutes to extinguish this fire. Fire loss estimated was reported at $25,000.

The second incident occurred at 12:45 am, Tuesday, February 14, that involved a District Heights townhouse. Firefighters arrived at a 2-story, middle of the row, townhouse in the 1700 block of Rollins Place and found fire showing from the rear of the structure. Firefighters were able to quickly contain and extinguish the fire. The majority of the damage was limited to just the one townhouse. Fire loss at this fire is estimated at $50,000 and the cause is under investigation.

New Leadership Position Filled by Top Volunteer Member - Frank Underwood

Deputy Fire Chief Frank Underwood

The Prince George’s County Fire/Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department has announced the appointment of Frank Underwood, as Lieutenant Colonel of the Volunteer Services Command. This is a newly created Deputy Fire Chief level position.

Prince George’s County Fire Chief Marc S. Bashoor notified members of the Fire/EMS Department of the new appointment, stating, “Effective February 13, 2012, Frank Underwood will be appointed as the Lieutenant Colonel of the newly created Volunteer Services Command. Please join me in welcoming and congratulating Frank on his appointment.”

Prince George’s County is the busiest and one of the largest combination--career, civilian, and volunteer--Fire/EMS Departments in the Country. The Department responds to about 130,000 calls for service, annually.

The Fire/EMS Department has nearly 2500 volunteer members on the rolls, of which about 1,000 are capable of providing emergency fire and emergency medical services. The majority of the others serve in various capacities such as auxiliary membership, life members, or administrative faculty.

With such a large contingent of volunteer members, Fire Chief Bashoor, County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III, and Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for Public Safety Barry L. Stanton worked together to create a command staff position dedicated to working with the volunteer body of our Fire/EMS Department.

Frank Underwood has been a member of the fire service for 45 years and has an extensive background of fire/EMS training and volunteer leadership experience, including having served as President of both the Maryland State Firemen’s Association and the Prince George’s County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association. He is a life member of the Allentown Road Volunteer Fire Department, as well as the Branchville Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, Inc. From 2002 up to the time of this appointment, Underwood also has served as a Commissioner on the County Fire Commission. He retired from the federal government in 2006, having served as a Computer Specialist for the Department of the Army at the Army Research Laboratory in Adelphi, MD. In the early 1970's, during the Vietnam era, Frank served our country as a member of the United States Marine Corp.

Underwood feels one of the biggest obstacles he hopes to take on is communications between the volunteers and the leadership of the Department. “Communications between all parties has always been a problem, as I see it,” stated Underwood. “It is something I intend to improve.”

“This is a chance for the volunteers to have a voice at the command level of the Fire/EMS Department," said Underwood. "I hope to be an asset to the Department and to the Fire Chief.”

Frank Underwood resides in College Park with his wife of 37 years. He has two grown children, as well as grandchildren with whom he enjoys spending time. He will receive a salary of about $122,000.

Police Officers Receive Fire Chiefs Award and Commendation

Placing themselves in harm’s way while protecting and assisting others is a risk police officers encounter on a daily basis. Recently, four Prince George’s County police officers were subjected to a different type of danger when they entered a burning apartment and assisted in evacuating the building’s residents. Fire Chief Marc S. Bashoor, citing the officer’s actions as above and beyond their normal call of duty, presented each of them with the Fire Chief’s Award and a glowing letter of commendation. The awards ceremony was held at the College Park Fire/EMS Station #812, where the boarded up windows of the fire damaged sixth floor unit at the Spellman House could be seen just a block away.

Fire Chief Bashoor was joined by County Police Chief Mark A. Magaw, in presenting the awards to Police Corporal Eric N. Lee, Police Officer First Class Daniel Gonzalez, Police Officer Jonathan A. Eyler, and Police Corporal Matthew K. Ling.

On Saturday, February 4, 2012, at approximately 2:30 P.M., police officers observed smoke billowing from the window of a sixth floor unit in the Spellman House Apartments. The building, located in College Park, is occupied by senior citizens and mobility challenged individuals. Upon notifying their dispatcher of the fire, consequently ensuring notification of the Prince George’s County Fire/Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department, the four officers hurried to the seven-story building.

The officers made their way up to the sixth floor and there encountered moderate smoke conditions. After receiving no response at the door of the apartment on fire, the officers forced entry. Without hesitation or fear for their own safety, they entered the smoke-filled unit and searched for occupants. Finding no one inside, they returned to the hallway and realized the audible alarm system was not operational. They determined that residents were not aware of the fire and began knocking on the doors closest to the apartment of origin. They knocked on as many doors as possible, alerting residents of the fire and assisting those who needed help. Shortly thereafter, the Fire/EMS Department arrived and extinguished the fire that was mostly contained by the sprinkler system.

“If not for your quick thinking and immediate action, the outcome of this occurrence could have been tragic,” stated Fire Chief Bashoor. He continued, saying, “For your exceptional performance on the scene of this incident, you are hereby presented the Fire Chief’s Award. Congratulations, and thank you for an outstanding job. Your actions reflect well on you personally and professionally and on the Prince George’s County Police Department, as a whole.”

Fire Chief to Testify in Annapolis on Benefits of Sprinklers

In the late 1980's, Prince George's County was the first county in the nation to pass legislation requiring residential sprinklers in all new construction. This was in conjunction with previously passed legislation requiring a working smoke alarm in all residences. The Residential Sprinkler Law was phased in over a 5-year period and was fully in effect in 1992. Since then, Prince George's County has experienced tremendous success with the law and results. Prince George's County has always been used as a model for other jurisdictions around the country, in establishing their own residential sprinkler ordinances. Prince George's County Fire Chiefs have been invited to speak at conventions, as well as before governing bodies, about the benefits we have seen since our legislation became effective. This is the reason State of Maryland Fire Marshal William Barnard invited Prince George's County Fire Chief Marc S. Bashoor to testify this afternoon before the Education, Health & Environmental Affairs committee at the Maryland State House. Chief Bashoor will be testifying before the committee against Senate Bill #331, entitled, Manufactured Homes – Sprinkler System Requirement – Opt-Out for Local Jurisdictions.”

During his testimony, Bashoor will state, "In the past two weeks, three fires in Prince George's County were extinguished by sprinklers. The combined fire loss in these incidents totaled $12,500. Since the County Residential Sprinkler Law took effect 20 years ago, it is sad to report that numerous people have perished in home fires. However, I am pleased to report that not one death, none, occurred in a sprinklered residence."

A Fort Washington family was found unconscious in their home suffering from exposure to carbon monoxide (CO). At about 12:30 am, Tuesday February 7, officials from Children's National Medical Center contacted the Fire/EMS Department's 24 hour Watch Office. Doctors were treating a young child at their facility that had been transported there from the family house on Monday evening. After performing blood work on the young child Doctors discovered high levels of CO. After attempts by the hospital to contact the family at home were unsuccessful they contacted the Fire/EMS Department and requested we go to the residence in the 8300 block of Bernard Drive and check on the family.

Firefighters and paramedics responded to the home and found five occupants unconscious and immediately removed them from the house and initiated treatment. Firefighters used detection equipment and found high levels of CO, 450 parts per million, inside the homes atmosphere. Anything over 5 ppm is considered unhealthy. The severity of health implications varies based on the amount and the period of time someone is exposed to CO.

The family of five, including mother, father and three children were flown by meda-vac helicopters from the Maryland State Police and United States Park Police to a hospital in Baltimore that has a hyperbaric chamber. The five were in critical condition even though some of the patients were displaying slight signs of improvement after being treated on the scene. The age of the children range from an infant to pre-teen.

Firefighters discovered a malfunctioning natural gas furnace and believe that to be the cause of the high amounts of CO. The furnace was turned off and the house was ventilated by firefighters.

CO is often referred to as the "Silent Killer" for it is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas. It results from incomplete oxidation of carbon in combustion and/or the inadequate ventilation of CO after normal combustion. Worn or poorly adjusted and maintained combustion devices (e.g., boilers, furnaces) are just one of several significant sources, or if the flue is improperly sized, blocked, disconnected, or is leaking. A working CO detector is the best method citizens and residents can use to detect the presence of CO. CO detectors are inexpensive and can be purchased at hardware and home improvement stores.

Carbon Monoxide Safety

• Keep gas appliances properly adjusted.
• Use proper fuel in kerosene space heaters.
• Install and use an exhaust fan vented to outdoors over gas stoves.
• Open flues when fireplaces are in use.
• Have a trained professional inspect, clean, and tune-up central heating system (furnaces, flues, and chimneys) annually.
• Do not idle the car inside garage and never use a charcoal grill indoors.
• Install a working CO alarm.

Did you know that young children’s skin is thinner than older children and adults, and their skin burns at lower temperatures and more deeply?

Since burns are recognized as one of the most painful and devastating injuries a person can sustain and survive, we want to arm you with the tools to keep your children safe from this devastating injury.

Burn Awareness Week is celebrated from February 5-11, 2012. This year one of the focus areas is preventing scald burn injuries.

A scald is a burn from hot liquid or steam.

60% of all scald injuries are to children ages 0-4. (National Center for Health Statistics)

Children have thinner skin than adults which can result in a more severe burn.

The most common places children experience scalds are in the kitchen or dining rooms and in the bathrooms.

The maximum recommended residential water temperature is 120˚F (48˚C).

It is important to remember that children, especially those ages 4 and under, may not perceive danger, have less control of their environment, may lack the ability to escape a life-threatening burn situation and may not be able to tolerate the physical stress of a burn injury.

Top tips to keep your kids safe around the house.

KITCHEN AND HOT FOOD

Keep children at least 3 feet from hot appliances, pots, pans or food.
Use spill-resistant mugs when drinking hot liquids around children.
Avoid using tablecloths or anything a child can pull on and cause hot food to spill.
When cooking, use back burners and keep pot handles turned towards the back of the stove.
Always tuck cords from appliances where children cannot reach them.
Never hold a child when cooking something hot.
Test and stir all food before serving children to make sure it is cool enough to eat.
Supervise children closely when they are in or near the kitchen.

BATHROOM

Always test the bath water with your hand before bathing children.
When children are in or near the bath, watch them closely checking the water temperature frequently.
If you are unable to control the temperature that comes out of your faucet, install special tub spouts or shower heads that can shut off the flow of water when it gets too hot.

Sprinkler systems designed for specific occupancies controlled fires in three separate incidents within a 20-hour period in Prince George's County. The first incident was on Friday, February 3, at about 6:30 pm. Firefighters were alerted to a fire in a 2-story single family home in Allentown. Upon arrival firefighters discovered a kitchen fire that was mostly extinguished by the residential sprinklers. Firefighters completed the extinguishment and confirmed that fire had not spread. The fire caused an estimated $2500 in fire loss, however, the family was not displaced and no injuries were reported.

Just after 1:00 am, Saturday, February 4, firefighters from the Northview Fire/EMS Station were dispatched to investigate an automatic fire alarm called in by a alarm monitoring company. Firefighters responded to 16700 Governors Bridge Road in Bowie, a 1-story commercial structure, and found a small fire inside. The commercial grade sprinkler system had activated and extinguished the majority of the fire. Firefighters quickly extinguished the remaining fire. Fire loss was limited to an estimated $5,000 and the cause of the fire was attributed to an electrical cord. No injuries reported.

A third incident occurred later Saturday afternoon in a sixth floor apartment at 4711 Berwyn House Road in College Park. It appears that an unattended candle came in contact with combustible materials igniting the fire although the official cause remains under investigation. The sprinkler system in the apartment activated holding the fire in check until firefighters arrived and completely extinguish the fire. Fire loss is still being tabulated. No injuries were reported.

At around 2:30 pm, Saturday, February 4, Prince Georges County Police Officers working in the College Park area witnessed heavy black smoke issuing from the 6th floor of an apartment building.

The Spellman House Apartment building at 4711 Berwyn House Road is a 7-story assisted living center designed for senior citizen occupancy. The pair of police officers immediately notified their dispatcher while they made their way to the building and up to the 6th floor. The hallway was starting to fill with smoke as the officers banged on the door trying to alert anybody that might have been inside. Fearing the worst the officers forced their way into the apartment and without hesitation or protective equipment performed a search of the apartment that was filled with smoke and heat. Fortunately no one was inside and the officers made their way back downstairs assisting residents along the way.

Firefighters arrived and advanced hose lines into the apartment of origin. The sprinkler system had already activated and held the spread of the fire and firefighters extinguished the remaining hot spots.
Residents were advised to shelter in place, however, about 50 residents evacuated and were sheltered in the lobby and community room until the all clear was given to return to their apartments at about 3:15.
No injuries occurred. One police officer was evaluated by paramedics for exposure to smoke but did not go to the hospital.

The occupants of three apartments will be displaced. The apartment of origin and the two below on the 4th and 5th floors will be displaced mainly due to water damage. Management and the County Citizen Services Unit will assist those displaced with temporary shelter.

The fire appears to have started accidentally and possibly caused by an unattended candle. Fire Inspectors are also looking into the failure of the alarm system to sound an audible alarm. The only warning provided to residents was a visual blinking alarm.

There were 40 firefighters and paramedics operating on the scene on-board 12 Fire/EMS units. Fire loss estimates are still being tabulated.

Injured Firefighter Released From Hospital

The Prince George's County Firefighter injured by an electrical shock on February 1, was released from the hospital this afternoon. The 9-year-veteran member has regained more range of motion in his hand and more feeling in his arm. Although he is showing signs of progress he still has a long way to go for a full recovery. His immediate future plans include a trip to a neurologist and follow-up visits to the excellent physicians at the Burn Unit at the Washington Hospital Center next week. Currently there is no time frame for his return to work.

The firefighter wished to thank everyone for the calls, prayers and support shown to himself and his family over the past few days.

This position will be filled by life time volunteer member Frank Underwood. His credentials speak volumes about his experience and love of the fire/EMS service. Underwood, a resident of College Park, will take on the Deputy Fire Chief role in a newly created position of Volunteer Services Command. Additional information about Frank and his new position will be released shortly. Congratulations Frank!!!

Frank brings with him over 45 years of fire service experience, including having served as
President of the Prince George’s County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association (PGCVFRA)
from 2000–2001, and as the President of the Maryland State Firemen’s Association (MSFA)
from 2008–2009. In addition, Frank has also served on the Prince George’s County Fire
Commission for 10 years. Frank is also a life member at both the Allentown Road Volunteer
Fire Department and Branchville Volunteer Fire Company and Rescue Squad.

Firefighter Hospitalized After Electrical Shock at Station

A Prince George’s County Firefighter is hospitalized in "good" condition after sustaining an electrical shock inside his Fire/EMS Station. On Wednesday evening, February 1, the career firefighter was unplugging a shoreline from a fire engine at the Beltsville Fire/EMS Station 831 when the incident occurred.

A shoreline is a heavy-duty electrical cord that carries an electrical charge from a fixed outlet in the station to a piece of Fire/EMS equipment. The shoreline power charge, 120 volts, is used when a unit is turned off and a continuous electric charge is needed to maintain the heavy-duty battery system and for electrical components on-board the fire/EMS apparatuses that require a “trickle” charge while the unit is not operating.

The firefighter and other crewmembers were preparing to leave the station for training when he was in the process of disconnecting the shoreline from the fire engine. It appears the wires pulled away from the protective housing where the shoreline is connected to the piece of apparatus. The exposed wires came in contact with the firefighters arm causing an electrical shock that was powerful enough that he was thrown to the engine room floor.

Advanced Life Support paramedics from the nearby Calverton Fire/EMS Station #841 responded and together with personnel from Beltsville Fire/EMS Station #831 transported the injured firefighter to the Burn Unit at Washington Hospital Center where he currently remains.

The injured firefighter experienced an inability to move his right hand with an accompanying loss of sensation and disorientation. The firefighter remains hospitalized at least through tonight as he still has not regained feeling in his hand and arm. His condition will be re-assessed in the morning.

Battalion Chief Joe Cardello stated, “Captain Kilpatrick (Injured firefighters supervisor) and I, along with the leadership of the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department and the Beltsville Volunteer Fire Department, have, and will remain in constant contact with the injured firefighter to ensure that he has what he needs and that he remains in good spirits.”

Prince George’s County Fire Chief Marc Bashoor is one that remains in contact with the hospital and command staff personnel on the condition of the firefighter. He plans on visiting the firefighter later today. He stated, ”Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured firefighter and his family. This incident demonstrates the hazards of our job as firefighters extends well beyond the fire ground.”

The injured firefighter is currently in Room 28, Wing 3E, in the Burn Unit at Medstar.

Today is February 1, 2012, and being as it is the first day of the month, it is time to perform the most basic function in ensuring you, your family and loved ones are protected by a working smoke alarm.

On the first day of every month the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department will remind you to test your smoke alarm to ensure it is working.

Push the “test” button on the front cover of your wall/ceiling mounted smoke alarm.

An audible warning tone should be heard loud and clear throughout the area it is located.

• If your smoke alarm does not emit a sound when tested:

1. Provide a fresh battery to the smoke alarm and re-test.

2. Still no audible warning?? Replace the smoke alarm with a new one immediately.

When testing your smoke alarm, it’s a good time to gather your family and allow them to hear the audible warning signal. Let them know what to do in the event they hear the warning and discuss two ways out of every room and designate a safe meeting place outside in the event of a fire or other emergency.

"SAFETY - FIRST DAY of the Month"

One of the initial fire safety additions made by incoming Fire Chief Marc Bashoor in 2011 was to establish a philosophy of safety. This philosophy is not only geared toward firefighters and medics being safe during the course of their shift, but is also directed at our citizens and residents. "SAFETY FIRST - Ensures Everyone Goes Home," is designed as much for those we serve as for those serving. If all homeowners maintained working smoke alarms in their homes, their families would benefit from the early warning of a fire and exit their home safely. The Prince George’s County Fire/Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department would also benefit, as an early notification would enable us to respond and extinguish a fire before total damage could occur. A working smoke alarm in a Bowie home recently demonstrated that both the family and firefighters survived and were able to go home. No firefighters were injured and operated with minimal exposure to the extreme dangers of the job. A Lewisdale family had no smoke alarms in their home and the consequences were tragic.

As an extension of the "SAFETY FIRST- Everyone Goes Home" program, we will remind all citizens and residents of monthly basic smoke alarm tips. This will ensure they are afforded the constant protection of a working smoke alarm. On the first of every month, the Fire/EMS Department will remind everyone the day is "SAFETY - FIRST day of the month," the day on which smoke alarms should be tested to make sure they are working. Included with each monthly reminder will be other safety tips associated with smoke alarms. We encourage everyone to take advantage of these tips. We further encourage fire departments and citizens and residents across the country to use these safety reminders, as well.

The Fire/EMS Department will also expand our SAFETY FIRST smoke alarm initiative by requiring all 45 of our Fire/EMS Stations to visit their communities and make contact with a minimum of 40 homes per month. Firefighters will discuss fire safety within the home and test smoke alarms. If a new smoke alarm is needed, they will install one free of charge.

The life and death significance of having working smoke alarms was demonstrated in two recent incidents. Both of these incidents involved fires occurring in single-family homes around 4:00 A.M., while family members slept. One home had a working smoke alarm; the other did not.

On November 25, 2011, firefighters responded to the 14100 block of Pleasant View Drive in Bowie, where a family was awakened by an activated smoke alarm just after 4:00 A.M. One family member was able to exit the home on his own, while other family members sheltered in place. They were unable to escape, due to the high heat and thick smoke that filled their second floor bedroom hallway. Firefighters arrived, extinguished the fire, and rescued the four trapped occupants.

On November 27, 2011, just before 4:00 A.M., firefighters responded to the 2400 block of Griffen Street in Lewisdale for a house fire. The crews arrived and found heavy fire and thick smoke coming from the one-story, single-family home. One family member escaped; however, three others did not. Two adult females and one child died from smoke-related injuries. It appears they became aware of the fire and attempted to escape but were too late. The heat and smoke had already filled their hallways and bedrooms, making an escape impossible. The fire was located in the front of the house; they were sleeping in the rear. They were unable to escape in time to save their lives, as the home did not have a working smoke alarm. They were therefore not afforded an early warning.

Firefighters canvassed the Lewisdale community the day of the tragic incident, expanding efforts to check smoke alarms countywide the next day. Results were alarming. In some areas, there was a 40 percent of the homes did not have a working smoke alarms. In December, a smoke alarm initiative, “Safety First – Home for the Holidays,” was instituted. This program had firefighters going door-to-door for two hours every Saturday and Monday. These campaigns showed that on an average, 20 percent of county homes do not have the protection of a working smoke alarm. The national average for homes not afforded the protection of a working smoke alarm is 25 percent. Of those, 4 percent of that figure includes homes that have no smoke alarm whatsoever. However, in this small percentage is where over 50 percent of all residential fire deaths occur.

"The number of homes without working smoke alarms is unacceptable, and we must do our best to ensure every home and every family is protected," stated Fire Chief Bashoor. "Personal responsibility on behalf of our citizens and residents to maintain working smoke alarms is the only way to achieve our mandate that every home and every family is protected by a working smoke alarm." He concluded saying, "We, the career, civilian, and volunteer members of our Department will continue to do our part to keep our citizens and residents aware of the importance of smoke alarms and make these life saving devices easy to obtain."

Radio System Update for PGFD Users

Based on feedback from field personnel and to maximize the efficiency of the A/B/C selector switch on the portable radio, we have decided to make some changes with regards to dispatch of units on various talk groups. Effective Friday, February 3, 2012 at 0700 hours, calls that were previously dispatched to 8-Golf-3 or 8-Golf-7 will now be dispatched to 8-Alpha-11 or 8-Alpha-12. Calls that were previously dispatched to 8-Hotel-3 or 8-Hotel-7 will now be dispatched to 8-Charlie-11 or 8-Charlie-12. This should drastically reduce the need to switch zones on emergency incidents. Technical Rescue, Water Rescue and Hazardous Materials calls will continue to be dispatched to the Delta zone.

Additionally, we have been made aware of a programming issue on our end that temporarily places the District of Columbia Fire/EMS zones out of service. We are actively working on this issue and should have this fixed soon. We are also looking forward to some new programming features on the mobile that will include a zone up and zone down button.

Bowie House Fire Contained to Bedroom

Just after 3:00 pm, Tuesday, January 31, Firefighters from the Bowie area were alerted to a fire on the second floor of a house.

Firefighters arrived quickly at the 2-story, Cape Cod, single family home in the 4400 block of Olando Lane and found heavy smoke coming from the top floor. A quick aggressive interior attack by first arriving firefighters contained the fire to a bedroom. The fire was extinguished within 5 minutes of arrival.

The three adult occupants escaped safely prior to the firefighters arrival.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, however, initial indications are that it was accidental and possibly caused by a candle igniting combustibles. Preliminary fire loss is estimated at $35,000. No injuries were reported and the 3 adult occupants will be displaced and are making their own arrangements for temporary shelter.

The Annual Public Safety Officer Recognition ceremony was held at the Knight of Columbus in Bowie on Saturday, January 28, 2012. The Fire/EMS Department was honored to have three members awarded by the Knights of Columbus with Firefighter of the Year and Paramedic of the Year distinctions.

Fire Fighter Michael Conway and Bowie Volunteer Fire Fighter Travis Murdoch were recognized as the Knights of Columbus Fire Fighters of the Year. The pair was recognized for their efforts where they rescued four occupants trapped on the second floor of their burning home in Bowie.

Fire Fighter/Medic Edward Scott was bestowed the Knights of Columbus Paramedic of the Year distinction for his role in helping to save the life of a 5-year-old Clinton girl that had stopped breathing.

Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Chief Marc Bashoor and Bowie Volunteer Chief Lee Havens were on hand to help honor the awardees.

Glenn Dale House Fire - One Firefighter Injured

Just before 2:30 am, Sunday, January 29, 2012, Firefighters fought a house fire that caused $300,000 in estimated fire loss. The fire at the 2-story single family home was caused accidentally and attributed to an electrical source. Fire/EMS arrived in the 8000 block of Wingate Drive in Glenn Dale and found a well-advanced fire on both floors of the structure. A Task Force was sounded bringing additional firefighters and resources to the scene to help battle the blaze. It required about 30 minutes to knock down the majority of the fire and another 45 minutes to extinguish all the hot spots.

The County Citizen Services Unit was providing assistance to the occupants that will suffer long-term displacement.

A firefighter sustained a leg injury while she was battling the fire and was transported in “good” condition to a local hospital. No civilian injuries reported.

Greenbelt Apartment Fire Quickly Extinguished

A quick arrival and fast actions by first arriving firefighters to extinguish a fire limited the amount of damage to an apartment building. On Saturday, January 28, 2012, at about 4:30 pm, firefighters were alerted to an apartment on fire at 8423 Greenbelt Road in Greenbelt. Fire/EMS units had just cleared another fire incident in Beltsville resulting in some fire units being closer to the reported Greenbelt fire. One of those closer than normal was from Branchville Fire/EMS Company 811 (North College Park). They were one of the first that arrived quickly to find heavy fire coming from the top floor of the 3-story garden style apartment building. Firefighters initiated an aggressive interior attack on the fire by stretching hose lines to the top floor and extinguishing the fire. Searches for civilian occupants still inside were negative and the fire was extinguished and contained to the apartment of origin. In addition to Branchville, Fire/EMS units from West Lanham Hills, Berwyn Heights, Greenbelt, Glen Dale, College Park and Bowie worked to extinguish the fire. There were 35 firefighters working at the scene. The bulk of the fire was knocked down with 7 minutes of arrival.

No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported. Fire loss is estimated at $35,000. The cause of the fire appears to be accidental and started when combustible products came in contact with burning incense. Although fire damage was limited to just the one apartment, six family units will be displaced because gas and electric utilities were shut off to the building. Those displaced include 8 adults and 7 children. The County Citizen Services Unit is working with apartment complex management to restore as many units as possible to limit the amount of time the families will be displaced.

Felony Arrest for Arson in Riverdale Fire

A Bladensburg man, a former Riverdale volunteer firefighter, was arrested today and is being charged with First Degree Arson to a dwelling in Riverdale. Gerard McBurnie Dixon Jr. is charged with maliciously setting a fire to a dwelling at 4504 Kennedy Street in Riverdale on June 29, 2008. On that date, firefighters from the Riverdale Fire/EMS Station and other nearby stations were alerted to a house on fire at 3:25 am and arrived to find heavy fire showing. A firefighter sustained minor burn injuries while battling the fire.

Gerard McBurnie Dixon, Jr., DOB of 9/21/88, was arrested out-of-state by law enforcement officials and is awaiting extradition back to Prince George’s County.

Prince George’s County Fire Investigators were assisted by Special Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the County Police Department in the investigation which led to the arrest. The investigation remains open and additional arrests are possible.

First Degree Arson is a Felony and if convicted, Dixon could face up to 30 years imprisonment or a fine not to exceed $50,000 or both.

Q&A and Awards Abound in Whirlwind Fire/EMS Station Visits

Prince George's County Fire/EMS Chief Marc S. Bashoor spent a large portion of his time on Monday and Tuesday visiting Fire/EMS Stations greeting personnel and presenting awards. In addition to greeting career, civilian and volunteer personnel he presented Emergency Services Awards, Fire Storm Awards and engaged the personnel in an open question and answer session. During these two days Bashoor visited 4 Battalions, 7 Fire/EMS Stations, greeted personnel from 16 Fire/EMS Stations that include just over 100 career, civilian and volunteer personnel. He awarded 12 Emergency Services Awards and 8 Fire Storm Awards. Bashoor found the time to attend a Public Safety Breakfast at the Laurel Fire/EMS Station #810 on Tuesday morning.

Fire Storm Awards are plaques which commemorate what is believed to be the busiest day in the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Departments history. On February 19, 2011, high winds and dry conditions sparked seven major incidents that sent all 45 Fire/EMS Stations into action and required mutual aid assistance from jurisdiction across the State of Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. Every Fire/EMS Station will receive a plaque to be prominently displayed in the station to commemorate the date.

Fire Chief Bashoor also presented numerous Emergency Services Awards to deserving career and volunteer personnel. These Awards include:

Emergency Service Awards - Multiple Firefighters - Career and Volunteer

Prince George's County Fire/EMS Chief Marc S. Bashoor presented several Emergency Services Awards to deserving, career and volunteer, members of the Department for their actions on a house fire in Lewisdale.

On Sunday, November 27, 2011, these personnel were crew members onboard fire apparatus from several companies which responded to a house fire at 2411 Griffen Street in the Chillum-Adelphi area. On arrival, crews encountered a working fire with three victims possibly trapped inside the residence. Some personnel entered the premise ahead of the hose line and searched in high heat conditions with low visibility while one took command of the incident and than proceeded to transition his abilities from incident commander to firefighter to paramedic throughout the course of the incident. Firefighters located three unconscious victims in different areas of the house and with the assistance of other crew members, removed the victims to the exterior of the house to awaiting EMS units.

Despite the outstanding efforts of all personnel on the scene, sadly, all three victims succumbed to their injuries after arriving at the hospital.

Fire Chief Bashoor was able to personally greet and present Emergency Services Awards to personnel from Chillum, Hyattsville and College Park on Tuesday, January 24. In making the award presentations he stated, "For your performance on the scene of the aforementioned incident, you are hereby presented a Fire/EMS Department Emergency Service Award. Congratulations and thank you for a job well done! Your actions represent the excellent service our Department strives to provide to the citizens of Prince George’s County."
